Home to some of the largest trees in the world, the ancient redwoods, and the stunning ‘City by the Bay’ (San Francisco) the Pacific Northwest is the ultimate travel destination for nature lovers.

We spoke to Gate 1’s Vanessa Venturato who recently set out to explore this fascinating region on Gate 1’s 9 Day Pacific Northwest with Columbia River Gorge tour.

Why did you choose this trip and what had you heard about these places that made you decide on it? I chose this trip as the itinerary sounded really interesting, it was visiting places that I wouldn’t normally wouldn’t visit on my own, as I have always visited the major cities in the US. I had heard a lot about the Red Woods, which I was really interested in seeing.

What were the highlights of your trip?
The number one highlight would be Crater Lake National Park. I didn’t know it existed, and was in complete awe when I saw it. The other highlight was the Red Woods. Walking through the forest and looking up at these giant trees that have been in existence for so long was very special.

What was your favourite meal or what food did you have that you really enjoyed or felt was very authentic?
I had Clam Chowder a couple of times whilst on the tour. It is a well know dish along the Pacific Northwest and was so delicious. I especially loved how it is served in a cob bread bowl.

What travel tips would you give to someone preparing to go on this trip? Bring clothes that you can layer and comfortable walking shoes. Crater Lake was exceptionally cold, and we were even lucky enough to see snow. I was not prepared for how cold it was, but it get warmer as we made our way down south.

How was your tour manager and what were they like? In what ways did they affect your trip? Our Tour Manager Janice was fantastic. She was so informative about each area, and gave us some fun facts every day. She made the tour very interactive and engaging. She made the tour really enjoyable and everyone was happy.

How did being on an escorted tour affect your trip?
I really enjoyed being on the escorted tour, as I would never have got to experience the places we visited if I was travelling on my own. I also met some beautiful people on the tour and we got to make special memories together. It really felt like one big family.
