A visit to Venice would not be complete without an iconic gondola ride, but here are 4 other things that you simply must do when you’re in the charismatic ‘Floating City’ and ‘Queen of the Adriatic’.
1. See the Grand Canal
The 4-kilometre long waterway is hard to miss, but you should try to appreciate it from as many vantage points as possible. Buy a pass for the vaporetto, the ferry or waterbus service, and mingle with the local crowds as you travel along the palazzo-lined main street by boat.
2. Explore Rialto
Rialto is the financial and commercial centre of Venice and known for its markets and the famous Rialto Bridge. A short walk from the bridge you’ll find the Rialto fish market, that’s worth an early morning visit to experience the buzz of a market that’s been selling fresh seafood for over 600 years!
3. Visit homes of Holy Masterpieces
In Venice you’ll find more than 250 churches, many of which contain works of art by celebrated Venetian artists. Chiesa della Salute in Dosoduro features Tintoretto’s Marriage Feast at Cana. Impressive St Mark’s Basilica is decorated in the most magnificent mosaics and the list goes on with the likes of Basilica of Santa Maria dei Frari, where you can admire works by Bellini, Titian, Donatello and more.
4. Try Cicchetti
Best described as Venetian tapas, cicchetti are delicious bite-sized morsels of the region’s best seafood and other local treats. Cicchetti can be ordered at most cafes or restaurants, with late afternoon or early evening being the most popular time to sit back and enjoy the selection of small plates (with glass of Veneto wine!).
